Artist painting en plein air on a snowy rooftop in Manhattan

Ryan Johnson

Ryan Johnson (b. 1993) is a contemporary landscape painter currently living in Brooklyn, New York. He makes plein air landscape oil paintings on small prepared panels in places such as New York, New Mexico, and Texas. Ryan holds an MFA from Hunter College (2024) and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Washington and Lee University (2015), and has been featured in several solo and group exhibitions in New York, Virginia, and Texas.

The paintings are made rapidly on site, in a few hours or less. In sessions that follow the cycle of seasons, he picks a range of subjects from storms, fireflies, trees, and birds to rooftop views and wildfire haze. From Fort Greene, Brooklyn, to the Hudson River, he prioritizes making sense of his immediate surroundings. The works follow in long traditions of landscape painting, with special emphasis on French Impressionism and early American Modernist landscape painting.
